Stair masters gathered in Hulja

On 20 February, stairmasters were introduced to Compass, Europe’s leading staircase software. Participants also had the opportunity to Aru Grupp AS with an innovative, software-driven lathe factory with a production capacity of 7,000 staves per year.

According to Juhan Viis, the head of Aru Group, they started working with the German company Compass Staircase Software in March 2001 to develop lathe production and have not been disappointed. “With the software came know-how and a working culture without which it would be impossible to keep today’s complex production running smoothly.” said Viise, talking about the company’s development story. Today, the Aru Group employs 167 people and its main export markets are the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Ireland.
The CNC machining centres, which are housed in the factory buildings according to a special project, are unique, high-performance robotic devices, the like of which, according to a representative of the software company, can only be found in a handful of places in Germany. The staircutting, which normally requires a high level of carpentry skills, is carried out entirely on a computer and the parts are also automatically prepared for production. The system monitors the movement of the detail along the technological route in real time, and each machining program for a post, step, stile or toe board is generated immediately upon arrival at the corresponding machining centre.
In addition to presenting the software and the factory to the stairmasters who attended the event, Alar Just, Associate Professor at the TALTECH Institute of Construction and Architecture, was a guest speaker at the event and spoke to the stairmakers about the regulations relating to fire resistance and fire safety. It was agreed that timber-framed structures could be used more widely in Estonian public architecture if the related regulations and information were clearer.
